Be Money Smart!

UCCU recently sponsored a youth essay contest. We asked contestants to answer the following three questions in an essay that tells us about what they are learning from their participation in the BeMoneySmart program:

  1. What new habits have you gained from the BeMoneySmart program and how have them helped you?
  2. What BeMoneySmart tools and helps do you use?
  3. Do you have any great ideas that could help other kids learn about being MoneySmart?

Being Money Smart

by Sydney Robertson

The BeMoneySmart program has taught me how to keep track of my money, realize the rewards in saving money, and show me that getting good grades is rewarding. Keeping a record of how much you spend and save keeps you more aware of your money. Keeping track of your money is a good habit because when you get older what you do with your money determines what kind of life you will have. Making good habits when you are young sets you up for a lifetime of good money management.

The BeMoneySmart program not only shows you how to manage you money but, it shows you the rewards of being money smart. In this program they earn prizes and rewards. In real life, when you manage your money wisely you also get rewards. In life the rewards for wisely spending, tracking, and saving money, are a secure and abundant life. You don’t have to be a millionaire to have a secure life style. This program shows me that even if I don’t have a lot of money I can still make wise choices with what I have.

One of the greatest things about the BeMoneySmart program is how it encourages students to get good grades. This is an excellent idea because it motivates students to make the most of each class. A good education is so valuable; it sets up your success for latter life. Hopefully students realize that with a good education you can make a lot more that one dollar for every “A” grade.

The BeMoneySmart program offers many tools and aids; the one I use most is the dollars for “A’s”. I like the motivation it gives me to work hard in my classes and to do my best. I believe that education is very important to our country’s future. Showing students that education has rewards is an important principal to learn at any age.

One way to help other kids learn about being money smart is to send letters to the youth that have accounts at the Utah Community Credit Union. When I get a letter specifically addressed to me I read it. I believe that more youth would become aware of the BeMoneySmart programs if they individually were receiving letters.

The Utah Community Credit Union does so much for its accountholders. I appreciate the help and concern that I receive. I am grateful for the many opportunities that are offered. I have learned a lot about being money smart.
